About the Centre: Portrait of Dr. Basrur

Description: https://goto.oahpp.ca/sitecollectionimages/portrait.jpgThis portrait of Dr. Sheela Basrur was painted by Gerda Neubacher as part of FEMME, a series of portraits of almost 100 Canadian women. Gerda worked with the women to help them define themselves as they wished to be seen. Dr. Basrur’s portrait, like those of the other women, reveals how she saw herself as both a public and a private person.

“The image Gerda has captured so well in this portrait envisions a harlequin, representing two sides of my being – outer and inner, expressed and desired, achieved and as yet unrealized, restrained by convention and free to be myself.” Sheela Basrur

The International Women’s Foundation, Canadian Chapter, generously donated this beautiful portrait to Public Health Ontario where it hangs in the lobby of the main office at 480 University Avenue in Toronto.

About the Artist

Gerda Neubacher’s remarkable career has spanned more than 30 years in Canada, Europe and the United States.  From early beginnings in fashion design, Gerda began painting after moving to Canada in 1969. Her work—imaginative and proficient, with a primary focus on the female perspective—quickly rose to prominence.

In 2002, along with her son, Manny Neubacher, Gerda opened Gallery Neubacher.  The Gallery’s opening provided the opportunity to mount her first exhibit in more than a decade. MOVE continued to explore the female narrative, but with a global perspective. It was followed by FEMME.

Gallery Neubacher helps foster the careers of many established and emerging young Canadian artists. Gerda continues to accumulate a new cycle of nature-based paintings as she takes her rich and varied career to the next level.
