Dr. Sheela Basrur

Sheela Basrur :: A Celebration of Excellence

Dr. Sheela Basrur was instrumental in the creation of Ontario’s first public health agency during her term as Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. In recognition of her leadership, the Honourable George Smitherman, former Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, announced on March 4, 2008 that the headquarters of the new Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP) would be named the Sheela Basrur Centre. On April 23, 2009 the OAHPP celebrated the official opening of the Centre with a portrait unveiling and reception.

The Centre is much more than a physical space – thanks to the efforts of many individuals and organizations committed to continuing Dr. Basrur’s legacy. The Centre will organize events and initiatives to support public health renewal and leadership in Ontario – areas of great importance to Dr. Basrur. Specifically, the Sheela Basrur Centre will:

  • Disseminate practical tools and implement strategies required to mitigate public health threats, promote health and prevent injury
  • Deliver an Outreach Program that will invigorate the renewal of public health in Ontario

Sheela Basrur Centre Outreach Program
On November 27, 2008, the Sheela Basrur Centre Outreach Program was launched to provide integrated training and learning opportunities for health professionals such as nurses, doctors, researchers, technicians, caregivers and scientists. Find out more about the Outreach Program and the launch.
