Dr. Sheela Basrur was instrumental in the creation of Ontario’s first public health agency during her term as Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. In recognition of her leadership, the Honourable George Smitherman, former Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, announced on March 4, 2008 that the headquarters of the new Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP) would be named the Sheela Basrur Centre. On April 23, 2009 the OAHPP celebrated the official opening of the Centre with a portrait unveiling and reception. The Centre is much more than a physical space – thanks to the efforts of many individuals and organizations committed to continuing Dr. Basrur’s legacy.
